Rain, Rain GO AWAY…

Posted in Hmmmmm..., Pixie Tales at 5:51 am by ang

so that our summer can actually feel like summer.  Because the Pixies have had quite enough of the indoor shenanigans, thank you very much.  These children are such outdoor kiddos that the confinement of the past few days has rendered them a wee bit loco – and by loco, I mean that they are making my face slowly slide off of my skull!!  But whatever…

We went to East Texas for our holiday weekend – just a little overnight jaunt.  The highlight of the trip was my brother and sister-in-law arriving on Saturday afternoon carrying the newest edition to their family – a yippy dachshund.  And this little dog was in fact wearing clothing.  Yes, you read that right.  The dog was sporting a shirt. A collared short-sleeve shirt. It actually looked like an izod.  The mind reels…

So today looks like another rainy day – yea!!  We are planning on either going bowling, or just hanging around the house pestering the crap out of each other.  At this point, either option holds the same appeal.  Come on sunshine and save us from ourselves!!!

Know Thyself Baby…

Posted in Hmmmmm... at 8:45 pm by ang

I love to ask people really specific and personality-defining questions, like, “What’s your favorite book?” Or “what’s the one CD you could never throw out?” Or even “what’s your death row meal?”

Most people have a tendency to skitter off into some kind of emotional shoot-out when asked to reduce their entire person to one answer. But every now and again, I find a few, a happy few, who are willing to give it a go and try and answer. I found some such victims ladies today at my lunch at Chuck E. Cheese (I’m going to let that one slide by and address it later – I’m only sorry I cannot link “Chuck E. Cheese” to some website featuring graphic photos of hell). Anyway, it was a very interesting conversation because one of the main reasons I ask these questions, aside from the pleasure of watching people squirm, is that often I will collect excellent recommendations for reading and listening. Even though these recommendations do come with not a little stress and pressure.

BUT… just to demonstrate the ease with which such life-defining decisions can be made, here’s just a snippet of my “desert island list.”

Music: Miles Davis, Kind Of Blue

Book: Donna Tartt’s The Secret History

Movie: All About Eve

Food: sushi, sushi, sushi… or mexican food, or italian, food, or chinese food, or just the kind of food you can eat…

Beverage: orange juice

Alcoholic beverage: bellini

Magazine: National Geographic

Famous Female: Queen Elizabeth I

Famous Male: Soren Kierkegaard

We’ll revisit this list later, perhaps with favorite fictional characters, 5 dinner guests, and favorite TV. Until then faithful reader, mull over and enjoy…

Pixieville Gazette…

(for Honey and Poppy – who crave news)

The Fosters began the day as usual with a little dancing in the kitchen to whatever tunes came up on the ipod. Trixie was all aflutter about the day after her teacher had given them permission to bring a board game. After a 24-hour period of careful reflection, the Trix finally decided to bring this little number. Quite a nice choice, yes? Thursday is her last day of the unforgivingly rigid schedule of “school nights” and from her behavior, you’d think she was being sent home from a tour in ‘Nam! Squidge got an early start on pestering her sister this morning. If you live nearby, you probably heard the Pixies bickering – their sonic radius measures at roughly 2.3 miles. It’s an oddly prideful feeling to realize that your children could compete at the national, nay even international level, if only there were events with titles like “Stop Copying Me!” or “You Didn’t Ask If You Could Touch That!” or even just a general Whine-Off. I really think I’d have some strong competitors here. Anyway, Squidgus is also eagerly anticipating her last day of school and ready to run at summer with full speed. We’re looking forward to arts camp and swimming at the pool and treking to the BEACH, with a few in-between trips to Honey and Poppy’s house in Georgetown. As for the Pixie Wrangler, I’m taking the summer off from work to be with the Pixies and let them scoop huge chunks out of my brain with their ceaseless, but nonetheless creative and entertaining, chatter. But as my own childhood years will attest – that’s karma baby!!

Because He’s A Kook…

Okay, I really, really like Rufus Wainwright. A lot. His music is a lush and layered sonic vista, innovative and unexpected. This is a great contrast to someone say like, Britney Spears, who, although she is also a kook, is neither unexpected nor innovative.

I Reckon I’m It ‘Cause I’ve Been Tagged…

by Kara, so, as requested, here, in no particular order, are my favorite restaurants in Houston: (insert dramatic fanfare…)

1. Molina’s – Mexican food in Houston is a cultural divider. Everyone has an opinion; everyone has their favorite. Perhaps that’s why it’s such a great place to live for a Mexican food lover – we have neither time nor space for Mexican food that sucks!! The point is this – Molina’s does great basics and our kids love it too. So for the Fosters, it doesn’t get much better than this – our Thursday evening staple.

2. Goode Company BBQ/Seafood – okay, okay, you legalists, I know that this is really two restaurants together, but hey… it’s my blog baby and I’ll cheat if I want to. The Spouse really loves the seafood, while I dig the BBQ. Try the catfish and shrimp – or if you do the BBQ thang, consider it manditory to order the chocolate pie!

3. Ragin’ Cajun – sometimes the day calls for a cold beer and dirty Cajun food, and that kind of day calls for Ragin’ Cajun. Bare bones atmosphere, simple dining, an homage to the low maintenance family. Bingo!!

4. The Mason Jar – I looooooooooove Sunday brunch and this place delivers. Try the Mason Jar waffle – fluffy and served with cream, strawberries and pecan dressing. Ding dang!!

5. Pappas Burger – the Spouse and I love a good burger, but what puts any burger joint over the line is the quality of the “basket” – you know, the burger/fries combo. There are plenty of spots in H-Town with either a good batch of fries or a good burger; rare is the place that has both. Welcome to Pappasland!

Because 5 is constricting and limited, I will include a couple of Honorable Mentions, just because…

Niko Niko’s – if you’ve never had a gyro ever, then stop reading this, get into your car, and drive to this place. Enjoy the goodness and then you will be ready to revisit this blog because your mind will be clear. If you do not enjoy your gyro, it’s probably best not to come back here. Ever. Because there is something wrong with you mentally. And I just don’t need that kind of reader…

Little Pappasito’s – having a rough day? Step 1: Drive on over to Richmond and Kirby. Step 2: Order beef fajitas (not forgetting a little side of garlic butter) and the frozen raspberry margarita. Step 3: Spend the rest of the evening thinking about how you’ll thank me for this terrific advice.

There’s A Bun Inside Of Me…

Posted in Pixie Tales at 7:45 pm by ang

Okay, so Squidge had a dance recital this evening: a very exciting debut from whom I believe will be an “artist to watch” over the next decade! All in all, she was delightful. Dance ability – check! Personality – check! Stage presence – check, check! And, of course, appearance… (wait for it) CHECK!!! Now, why, you ask, am I so giddy about points scored in the appearance column? Well dear readers, for one simple reason. A bun. That’s right, a bun. A HAIR bun.

For those of you who don’t know me, I am relatively beauty challenged. I have cultivated the ability to get myself ready for anything in 15 minutes – although it took me 22 for Mellie’s wedding! Most days, I forget to brush my hair, and I keep it long because it requires the lowest possible maintenance. So when I was told Squidge was to have her hair in a bun, the blood immediately drained down to my ankles. They might as well have told me to highlight and French braid it. To wit, this is what Emmy’s hair normally looks like:

I know, I know, but you can leave your outrage and child abuse concerns in the comments section. The point is that despite my grievous shortcomings, I managed to pull off THIS:

Oh. My. Gosh. Yes Ma, I DID IT. Sure it took 4 gallons of Aqua Net, 4 bobby pins, eye of newt and prayer. But the tiny dancer looked GREAT… as you can see for yourselves:

Boom baby! How do you like them apples buns??

Has It Been Almost A Year? Really? I Mean, REALLY???

Posted in Pixie Tales at 8:51 am by ang

Ding dang!! I should start this thing back up again. Right after Mother’s Day – and not a moment too soon!

Here are the best Mother’s Day memories from 2007:

- the Pixies waking up and making cards back in the playroom with the door closed. At one point, Squidge comes down the hall (I’m reading in the front room) and tells me that they are just “doing some things” in the back and that I should just continue reading as if nothing is at all out of the ordinary. This exchange is capped by Squidge running back down the hall and announcing, sotto voce, “I tricked her!”

- having a Mason Jar Waffle at (wait for it…) the Mason Jar. Hands down my favorite Sunday brunch spot of all time. The waffle comes with cream and butter pecan syrup! So decadent it’s probably illegal in the more mirthless communities around the world.

- my bracelet from Squidge. The beads are all really sharp and not a little painful and there is the word “Mom” right in the middle in those letter beads that remind me of summer camp. But her face lights up when I have it on my arm – even though she tried to give it to Daddy a couple of times after I reprimanded her yesterday for driving her sister up the wall. I love her logic: “How dare Mommy threaten me with time out! I’ll take away her precious jewelry and bestow it upon my loving father – Ha! That’ll show her!!!!” (insert menacing laugh)

- Trixie reading an entire book to me while I folded laundry. I’m going to be honest here and confess that I find folding laundry, or just thinking about laundry in general, is uninspiring at best. But listening to the animated narrative voice of my oldest – and don’t think she doesn’t understand the emotional current of ANY story and turn it into a FULLY COMMITTED vocal performance – can elevate even the most menial of tasks.

- Michael cooking dinner. Any time that man cooks it always feels like Mother’s Day. Consistently delicious and appropriately varied. A girl just can’t get any luckier than this at mealtime!!

- going to bed without bathing. The Pixies were giddy. Enough said.

Thank you my sweet family for a terrific Mother’s Day. And to my sister Jennie – a wonderful mother in her own right. And to Mellie – who, since she is at this very moment growing a person, experienced her first Mother’s Day this year.

And to my own mother – hats off to you Honey! You’re the best there is!
